Summary:

On the way back to Rivendell the remains of the Fellowship pass near Mirkwood-that-was.

A small story about big things: old friends and utter strangers, change and grief, and new beginnings drawing strength from age-old roots. A story of hope.

Recommended for all-around excellent characterizations, for lush and stately flowing prose, and most of all, for Elrond’s POV that will twist your heart.

Also this take on Thranduil is easily one of my personal favourites; magical, ancient, and mysterious, but not without warmth - quite like an impenetrable primeval forest that will still put out new green shoots as need and opportunity arise.
