One of my guaranteed bite-sized feel-good fics: it has gardening, and potato-patch orcs, and Gandalf being, for once, at a loss for words.

(Hint: there's a sequel, and it's just as good.)

Summary:

Legolas does not think the way other elves do. He does not do things the way other elves do. He does not want the things other elves want.

And as for Gimli - well, Legolas doesn't know what to think or do or want where Gimli is concerned.

In which Legolas is strange even for a Mirkwood elf, and takes an even stranger journey from indifference to lust to love. A get-together story just the way I like them ♥

Extra love for being written very firmly in the book-verse. And for having a dark-haired Legolas (yes I know I'm shallow).

In the wake of Gandalf's death Legolas faces up to some painful truths

This is not necessarily an easy story - it's sad, and angry, and more than a little a bit on the dark side, but the compelling, beautiful prose makes for really good reading, and the depiction of conflicting emotions is quite commendable in its honesty. And I'm always here for denial and confused lust.

Bilbo interrupts an argument between Bombur and Dwalin to explain the hobbit approach to ancestral weaponry, and the insanity of more or less the entire Took line.

Or: why frying pans are a hobbit's weapon of choice.

Summary:

Sometimes, however—when he nestles down for the night and stars splay out like a banner overhead—he allows himself to remember. Gondolin. He remembers a different sky, remembers the smell of flowers drifting through his open window. Crushed herbs from his garden between his fingers, their oil smearing into the delicate skin over his pulse. The weight of another cleaving tight against him. Coal-black hair carding through his hands.

Glorfindel returns to Middle Earth.

Finally finished!! A little late, but better late than never. :)

So here’s the thing, folks: I didn’t even particularly ship it going in, but I was intrigued, because, hey, Glorfindel. And then I got sucked right in and didn’t look back.

Return to Me is an achingly beautiful love story, where two people find each other again most unexpectedly, past all hope and chance and reason, only to discover they can't just pick up where they left off, because they both have changed, by past hurts and by the passing of time. They do get their happy ending, but there's quite a bit of angst on the way. (But it hurts so good!)

Also featuring: Glorfindel as the biggest schmoop ever to walk the face of Middle-earth. And you can now try and pry this ship from my cold dead hands. I dare you.

Summary:

The last in the video-inspired "To Kiss a Stranger series!" This particular fic was inspired by this video, which was a promotional piece for Showtime's "The Masters of Sex."

Many, many thanks to my beta squad!

So this is the fic that I read (and reread) and marveled how it actually did not melt my screen. Also an excellent example of how falling in lust love at first sight is done properly.

For one, it's funny; it has witty sparkling banter, dry humour and gentle needling. But the other aspect that gets me every time is the incredible, tangible chemistry between these two so-called strangers. And I'm not only talking about physical attraction (although this is rated M for a reason), but also the emotional connection that's evident starting from the first spoken exchange.

I just... this is one of the stories I go to when I need to smile at something fine and lovely and sweet. (And also one I need to pick apart someday to see how it's made.) Have a go, and I promise you won't regret it.

Gonna start posting this thing to Ao3 by tonight. To preview:

My father, being rather magnificent in his own style, and much cherishing our Sindar heritage and his descent from the high court of Thingol, forefather of our people, was often frustrated by the carelessness and light-seeming of his younger son. Whether about dress, or other things. And so in this, and in many matters, they were long at odds.

Their great dispute was always how and whether we of the Woodland Realm should relate to the world outside our borders. Thranduil sought ever to protect us, both against enemies, and to preserve the rare and ancient treasure of our culture. Legolas had the heart of a pilgrim: he thought our fate would rest in our alliances with the other peoples of the world.

But more than that: he loved and treasured the many peoples he met in his wide travels, high Dúnedain and simple horsemen of the Rohan steppes, halfling adventurers and citymen of Gondor, wise wizards and mysterious Ents, and of course, the Dwarves. He had a taste for strangeness, and he would come to live a life that seemed very strange to many. Strange, and wonderful.

Well, back to the morning when he returned from the Quest of the Ring.

My father, I am afraid, had stored up an armory of bitter and unhappy words within himself, in the long wait for Legolas to come home.

It was a great talent of the King, the crafting of clever, angry sayings. He could out with speeches that cut and carved like the keenest of knives, leaving wounds that lingered on through the years, etched in the memory of the listener. It was not a happy gift to own.

On A03

This has been complete for quite some time, and deserves to be read by all and sundry.

For instance, I'd like to tempt you to enjoy beautiful prose, observant characterization, wonderful OCs and a well-construed plot. Not to mention a perfect read-in-one-sitting length. (It's a skill, you know, to tell a complete story in less than 20k.)

And Gimli has all the best lines, as usual. And Thranduil is being very Thranduil, but it's actually a treat. (Although Legolas does not necessarily appreciate this.) And meeting the family is... complicated, as it should be. (It all works out in the end.)

Things Worth Knowing by @femmequixotic and @noeeon
Word Count: 164,523
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Summary: After the Battle, Harry thinks he’s left Hogwarts for good, but Minerva insists that all students return for an Eighth Year if they wish to sit for NEWTs in the spring, and Harry needs those NEWTs to go into the Aurors. Draco’s just grateful not to be in Azkaban. Or the Manor. He’s hoping he can steer clear of Potter this year and grapple with his own problems. Unfortunately for him, Potter appears to be one of those problems. And that’s not even addressing the fact that Potter’s got serious issues of his own, which Draco realises as he’s forced to share an Eighth Year dormitory room and several classes with the Gryffindor Git. If only they can make it through the year without killing each other, it should be all right, shouldn’t it?
Author’s notes: Written for @shiftylinguini in the 2017 @hd-erised fest. We are incredibly grateful to our amazing betas, @sassy-cissa, @o0o-chibaken-o0o, and @bixgirl1. You are all treasures, and your encouragement, speed, precision, dedication, and irreverent humour has meant the world to us. Shifty, we couldn’t have asked for a more amazing giftee–it was an honour to write for you, and we’re sorry it’s so LONG (that’s what Draco said…) Seriously, though, we have tried to tailor to your exact wants and prompt ideas, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the result! All mistakes are our own, and no magical creatures or their habitats were harmed in the making of this fic. Also the HD Erised mods are paragons of justice, proofreading, and wit, and we are beyond grateful for the extra time to complete this monster fic of monsters. Title is from The Hogwarts Song.

Read on AO3.

First off, this is easily one of the best 8th year stories I’ve read. Like ever. It doesn’t try to embellish the post-war reality, but rather tackles difficult issues (anti-Slytherin bias, personal feuds, homophobia) head-on, without giving in to the temptation of easy resolutions.

Because the students returning to Hogwarts are all war-scarred in their own way; hurting, confused, grieving -- Harry and Draco perhaps more than anyone else. Add to that the reality of being eighteen and trying to find your own identity and place in the world, and you get realistically portrayed characters who make stupid hurtful mistakes - and come up with quite brilliant ways to make up for them.

Second, I love a good slow-burn romance, and this is an excellent example of the genre - but it’s tagged “Frenemies with benefits” for a reason. (So you get both the pining and the hot stuff, which made me feel quite the spoiled reader.)

An finally, there’s a well-rounded cast of supporting characters (including a few OCs to die for), some quite nice subplots, and the whole thing is wrapped up in beautiful, flowing prose that makes that 160k read incredibly smoothly... so what are you all waiting for? Do yourself a favour and go read the thing already!

Numberless the ways, and imperceptible
Numberless the ways, and imperceptible. Legolas/Gimli, ~8900 words. In which Legolas experiences a sub-perceptual phase of a neurobiological process, Gimli has a nasty shock but recovers with aplomb, and Aragorn almost drowns in a glass of wine. One of my betas called this story “reverse pining”.

What it says above, but also a criminally underappreciated story with inventive worldbuilding and well-exploited cultural differences, where Legolas is painfully oblivious (but not in the way you think; “reverse pining” is actually an excellent descriptor for this), and Gimli is admirably patient (but not above being sneaky when an opportunity presents itself), and the rest of the Fellowship (plus Arwen) is laughing at them (and occasionally choking on their wine).

To quote from my own review: this is a fic that made me giggle and sigh and squeal and gasp and grip the edge of my seat in the way only the best stories do. Go read it already!

Summary:

This is a culmination of the Cursed Child AU posts on tumblr which people have asked to be archived for easy reading access. I will likely just add to this file rather than post headcanons as new works, so if you want to see any or all of my Cursed Child AU ramblings, this would be the story to subscribe to. These are largely copy pasted from tumblr with zero editing. So apologies for formatting or spelling mistakes. Who knows, maybe one day I will have the time to not only fix this but write the whole thing down.

In all simplicity, this meta/ficlet collection has cleared my skin, uncluttered my house, watered my crops etc. etc., and not only because I had missed some of the texts as they were posted on Tumblr.

Any of you who refuse to accept the utter clusterfuck of The Cursed Child as canon - this is for you. It makes it all better, trust me. (Includes, without being limited to: in-character characters with credible motivations, gaping plot holes closed, and the second-generation Golden Trio that's, well, pure gold ♥)

Summary:

Along last Friday, AO3 User Maybege mentioned that the same filmmaker who made "First Kiss" had also made a film called "Undress Me," as a promotional film for Showtime's series "The Masters of Sex."

Welp. Here we are. Similar story; two strangers. New twist: undressing each other.

Many thanks to Maybege, and my beta/cheerleading squad: tygermama, bubbysbub, and everbright-mourning. They are as awesome as they are silly, and have me half-talked into a story where Dwalin is a kindergarten teacher.

Ooh, here's the video, btw.

I think I may do a Bilbo version of this, too.

A spin-off to the "To Kiss a Stranger" fics I recced a while back (rec 1 and rec 2), and one of my go-to in-case-of-sads and guaranteed-to-bring-a-smile-to-your-face reads.

First off, the chemistry between those two here is just stupendous - intense without being creepy (considering that this is a first meeting), and sweet without turning into saccharine love-at-first-sight mush. Basically, this is the one case in a million where "you could cut the atmosphere with a knife" is not a cliché.

And the dialogue is the bring-a-smile-guarantee part: it's witty and funny and just the right amount of tender... and pray excuse me while I melt. Just. Go read the thing. Give yourself a happy moment.

Summary:

The last time Bilbo stepped foot in Aberdeen it was with a broken heart and a bachelor’s degree. All things considered, this time isn’t so different.

So what you have here is basically an excellent ghost story of the classic variety, only with a wonderful twist (hint: it's a slow-burn romance, just the way I like it), but that's just the bare bones of the thing. I won't spoil the plot for you, but suffice to say the story is very well-written, inventive, sweet and fun and sad and hopeful in all the right places, and has all the characters spot-on.

And yes, there's this one bit where I cried buckets. And the other where I squealed with true pure delight. And now I think I must treat myself to a reread.

Let me just say I'm so happy that my prompt inspired this gem.

... and now I don't know how to sing its praises without spoiling the whole thing for you. Well, first off, it goes places I never thought my prompt would go, and offers great depth of relatable emotion from a simple premise. Writing-wise, it's very well-thought-out piece with beautiful flowing prose.

And not only does this story work as a standalone, but it belongs to an entire wonderful verse of its own. Start from Finding a Voice - it will be worth your while, I promise.

Regulus Black and the Way Things Changed: A Not!Fic - Chapter 1 - imaginary_golux - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own]

imaginarygolux
In which Regulus, not Severus, is the Potions Master at Hogwarts, and a great many things go differently. And rather more crackily.

Told in bullet points; ignores Deathly Hallows because they annoy me.

Guys, guys, this is the most utterly brillantest thing I’ve read in this fandom for a while. And not only because it’s absolutely fucking hilarious, but rather because it’s one of those things that transcend crack; where the tongue-firmly-in-cheek what-ifs yield perfectly logical and satisfying plot twists, excellent characterizations and some very hnnnngh-worthy BAMF moments.

It says not!fic, but it reads like a fine story. And also yes, I laughed my arse off.

Meanwhile, Ori's lighting designer Bofur ropes his friend Bella Baggins into it.

Inspired by "First Kiss," a gorgeous video of twenty strangers kissing, which can be found here.

This is a story I've tagged in my bookmarks with 'in case of sads'. It has an excellent concept, one of the best-written kisses I've ever read, and the sweetest, funniest, schmoopiest dialogue you could ever wish for.

And Ori is brilliant. And the bagginshield chemistry is awesome. And did I mention the kissing? It's a special kind of wonderful, and that's all I'm willing to say without completely spoiling the thing for you. Just read the thing.
