Series: Part 1 of Garden in the Mountain

Summary:

Sometimes, Bilbo finds, not everything goes according to plan.

First an injury and the coming winter delay his leaving Erebor, then word from the Shire leaves him mourning his beloved Bag End. And because getting added to Thorin's council isn't trouble enough, Kili is in love with an elf, Fili may or may not have his eyes on a certain little scribe, everyone seems to think he is a lady hobbit, and Thorin needs to find someone to marry.

Okay. So the last part might not be trouble, exactly, except for the part where it makes Bilbo's rather hopeless attachment even more painful. Or it wouldn't if he hadn't possibly accidentally promised to provide Thorin with an heir... and Dáin just might still be scheming something.

Fortunately, if there's one thing hobbits are good at, it's growing things. And Thorin did promise him a garden.

As befits the date, this fic is a lot of firsts. It’s one of the stories that first pulled me into the Hobbit fandom, and into reading and writing more fic. Also it’s the first (if I remember right) longfic that I ever started reading as a WIP and followed until it was finished -- and that’s a very special journey that never gets old. And last but not least, this is the story that got me shipping Fíli and Ori, and my heart will forever have a soft spot for those two.

In all, it was a fascinating experience to watch this whole vast, sprawling thicket of a story unfold and put down deep roots into a rich and solid foundation of imaginative worldbuilding that allowed the main plotline to branch out into unexpected -- and wonderfully dramatic -- directions.

And it was an additional delight to see some of those secondary plotlines take on a life of their own, developing into more than mere offshoots of the main story, yet remaining rooted to it and adding a layer of depth to the entire tapestry.

TL;DNR: in my opinion, still one of the best long fix-it stories out there, extremely easy to get lost in, darker themes skillfully used to balance the fluff without sacrificing the guaranteed happy ending.

Hah, so I did manage to cook up something for this year's Nwalin Week! The prompt used was Danger or Protection - it's on the reader's discretion to decide which one comes across stronger here ;)

Surprisingly enjoyable plans, it turns out.

An absolutely, entirely and utterly delightful “Studio Ghibli meets Tolkien” AU piece, where Nori is being Nori and Dwalin is somewhat damaged goods, but they have top-notch chemistry, and the naughty bits have an enchantingly creative flair ♥

A sweet, hot and truly original feel-good gem with the added bonus of stunning art -- hope you enjoy!

Summary:

"Wrap it up, beautiful, we need to get a move on." Nori called out, from hanging out the passenger side of the armored car. The frame vibrated against Nori's hand as he made to pull himself out. The engine was still running. In a fit of inspiration he added. "Can you drive?"

Dwalin's disconcertingly blue eyes glinted in the light of the street lamps, and his teeth flashed a brief appearance as he took Nori's meaning. "Aye."

Winter Hill – A Prohibition AU

First of all, the Winter Hill series is a delight and a true spark of joy in what's rapidly becoming a very dark time indeed. I wholeheartedly recommend reading everything in it, full stop - but this particular piece works very well on it's own, and is as good a starting point as any.

All you need to know is that this is Boston, in the 1920s, and some human gangsters with a ridiculous armoured car are stupid enough to cross Nori - and by association, Dwalin. Hijinks ensue. Hijinks are very, very good. Enjoy with Irish Cream or other (bootlegged) beverage of choice :)

Summary:

Dwalin steps on a fairy ring.

A lovely atmospheric piece that's just that right little bit on the steamy side.

Recommended for evocative description, immersive-ethereal mood, and Nori the gorgeous fae (because like Dwalin, I want my fae folk to be sharp and hot and terrifying all at once).

Summary:

Captain Dwalin - a privateer for the Crown - is in love with beautiful, sweet, innocent Lady Norine.

His main rival (whom he is most definitely not in lust with) is the cockiest little man he ever met - Captain Vulpes, a pirate with a fast mongrel of a ship and a bad habit of stealing his targets out from under his nose.

...it's going to take him a while to realize they're the same genderfluid person.

My bookmark for this one says: 'The pirate AU to end all pirate AUs', and that's actually a 120% accurate sales pitch.

For those in need of more convincing, I propose you read this for:

  • A great swashbuckling romance in the mythical Age of Sail

  • A secret identity cleverly used to add convolutions and complications to said romance

  • A relatable, fully-fleshed genderlfluid protagonist

  • Love and lust and other confusing emotions (aka watch Dwalin squirm, he does an excellent job of it)

  • Said love and lust delightfully consummated

  • A compulsively readable story that’s so plain good you don’t even need to be in the fandom to enjoy it

  • Perfect length to finish in a weekend

  • What more can I say? One of my perennial favourites, and I like to spread the love ♥
