No one is thinking much about the Library as Erebor is being rebuilt, no one but Ori.

Because I’m always soft for these two, and this piece is all about them being young and sweet and discovering love together. And for such a short thing, it manages to pack in plenty of meaningful backstory detail and some excellent shippy chemistry.

And that’s it. That’s the story.

Oh, it’s set in a library, you say? Why yes, that’s one of my big ‘YAY’ buttons, too. (Apart from the everyone lives fix-it.) Take a warm cuppa -- guess what, it’s snowing here again -- and enjoy a nice solid moment of fluff!

Summary:

Uncle Bilbo lived Very Far Away, so he never stopped by for tea, and he missed the fireworks Gandalf lit off at the Lithe. It was too unfair. Instead, Frodo had to content himself with the letters and the wonderful stories that Uncle Bilbo would write to him.

A lovely story about a bright and curious hobbit child who gets adopted by a proud, cantankerous, and secretly quite sweet raven, about an uncle who lives far, far away, but sends the most wonderful letters and presents, and about grief, comfort, and choosing your own family.

Makes an excellent use of letters without exactly being an epistolary, and balances warmth, humour and bittersweetness in an effortless, uplifting way that never grows old for me.

Recommended for a gentle and comforting (re)read.

A fix-it inspired by my story "Of the Stone of Erebor and the Gardens of the Shire"

I recently reread this, and it still made me so happy I want to share the joy :)

Now, this is by far not the only fic to use the “cabbage patch hobbits” trope (or the “dwarven children carved from stone”, for that matter), but I feel it’s a classic for a reason.

Most importantly, the worldbuilding is solid and drives the plot like a steam engine, which is a good thing, since I doubt the two resident dorks could manage to resolve the romance plotline without some external incentive (lack of communication is a thing, here). The story also makes good use of the supporting cast, and the ending is appropriately fluffy without being sickeningly so.

In case you want a less sugar-coated take (aka no fix-it) of the same idea, try Of the Stone of Erebor and the Gardens of the Shire by the same author. It’s incomplete, but updated with a summary at the end, and the existing story is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

This rec is really for the entire series (though I’m only halfway through myself), but I thought I’d start at the first story for your convenience :P

But before I say anything else, I’d like to thank [profile] peneigh_dzredfohl for pointing out the fact that there even is fic for this AU (original concept by [profile] tosquinha and [profile] radiorcrist), and not only gorgeous art (multiple artists, check out this one for instance).

Anyway, this thing is brilliantly and unabashedly tropey, unfailingly fluffy, and just humorous enough to escape slipping into the territory of cloyingly sweet. The concept is a lovely twist to what you’d expect (I mean 9 times out of 10 you’d find the jobs the other way around), and it’s perfect fodder for small slice-of-life stories.

This whole series is the true comfort reading in the way only fanfic can offer: it will make you smile, and perhaps sigh at characters being stupidly, ridiculously oblivious, but the worst drama is about finding out the guy across the street actually might fancy you back. And that’s… that’s the good stuff, and there’s never too much of it to go around.

Series: Part 1 of Garden in the Mountain

Summary:

Sometimes, Bilbo finds, not everything goes according to plan.

First an injury and the coming winter delay his leaving Erebor, then word from the Shire leaves him mourning his beloved Bag End. And because getting added to Thorin's council isn't trouble enough, Kili is in love with an elf, Fili may or may not have his eyes on a certain little scribe, everyone seems to think he is a lady hobbit, and Thorin needs to find someone to marry.

Okay. So the last part might not be trouble, exactly, except for the part where it makes Bilbo's rather hopeless attachment even more painful. Or it wouldn't if he hadn't possibly accidentally promised to provide Thorin with an heir... and Dáin just might still be scheming something.

Fortunately, if there's one thing hobbits are good at, it's growing things. And Thorin did promise him a garden.

As befits the date, this fic is a lot of firsts. It’s one of the stories that first pulled me into the Hobbit fandom, and into reading and writing more fic. Also it’s the first (if I remember right) longfic that I ever started reading as a WIP and followed until it was finished -- and that’s a very special journey that never gets old. And last but not least, this is the story that got me shipping Fíli and Ori, and my heart will forever have a soft spot for those two.

In all, it was a fascinating experience to watch this whole vast, sprawling thicket of a story unfold and put down deep roots into a rich and solid foundation of imaginative worldbuilding that allowed the main plotline to branch out into unexpected -- and wonderfully dramatic -- directions.

And it was an additional delight to see some of those secondary plotlines take on a life of their own, developing into more than mere offshoots of the main story, yet remaining rooted to it and adding a layer of depth to the entire tapestry.

TL;DNR: in my opinion, still one of the best long fix-it stories out there, extremely easy to get lost in, darker themes skillfully used to balance the fluff without sacrificing the guaranteed happy ending.

Summary:

Commissioned fic by StrivingArtist on tumblr! Accord: A scent is more than the sum total of its parts. So is Bilbo more than just an Alpha and a Hobbit--he is the one Thorin wants to take him through his heat.

For reasons I’m not going to rehash here, A/B/O is usually a trope that makes me cringe. BUT there are a few exceptions: this underappreciated gem is one of them.

For one, the story uses the culture clash both to illustrate how differently biology might function for different ME races, and to actually discuss and question the characters’ preconceived assumptions about gender dynamics and their role in relationships. (Why, yes, I do like A/B/O when it gets metatextual.)

And secondly, the trope is employed to power a classic misunderstanding-fueled romance plot, which is brilliant. (Also it doesn’t hurt that the “typical” setup of who’s alpha and who’s omega gets casually subverted.)

Thirdly, I didn’t have much of a scent kink before reading this, but I’d like to point out the word “before”. Because the sensory descriptions are a treat: original, lush, and literally mouth-watering.

Recommended for two reasons: for being a fresh and inventive get-together story of two dorks trying to figure each other out-- and for the generous helping of hot steamy loving at the end *winkwink*

Summary:

Dwalin is sure that Bofur - famous knockerman, luck-touched, gorgeous - wants nothing to do with the likes of him, grizzled old warrior that he is. And Bofur is equally sure that Dwalin - royal blood, war hero, solid as the mountain itself - wants nothing to do with a dead dwarf walking.

Good thing they're both wrong.

A rare ship, yet one that works like a charm here, and it’s not solely due to the borrowed concept of knockermen (though I love the idea, and how seamlessly it fits into Tolkien’s world). However, what it does is add a wonderful depth to Bofur’s happy-go-lucky character and put him on an equal footing with Dwalin, at least as far as reputation is concerned.

Which brings me to my second point: the only thing that’s better than mutual pining is mutual pining where both besotted parties are equally star-struck. And on the receiving end of some merciless familial teasing from people who (quite rightly) think they’re being idiots. (Honestly, there’s not enough fic of Bombur being a brotherly little shit.)

But there’s little point in pining without a proper resolution, and when these two get on to the same page, they really get there, if you know what I mean *winkwink*. In all, a wonderful read that’s good for a second (or third, or fourth) helping as well ;p

Summary:

One of the many well-kept secrets of Dwarfkind was this: their children were born unable to see color. Now, one might think a lack of color vision is a handicap, or at least, would make working with precious stones very difficult! But luckily, this affliction is not a permanent one. For you see, a Dwarf will live their formative years in a monochrome haze until the day they find their soul match. Then, and only then, will the veil of grey be lifted, and the true colors of the world revealed.

This is really rather self-explanatory. Soulmate fics are my jam, and this particular trope with colours even more so. And then there’s this story that not only applies those parameters to one of my fave polyships, but is also gorgeously and atmospherically illustrated... Which is why I’m sitting here scratching my head and wondering why on earth have I not recced this before. (Though I was reading a LOT of fic around the time this was first posted. Sometimes gems fall through the cracks.)

But I’m recommending this now! Style-wise, the prose is pure and enchanted fairytale stuff, and a delight to read. And the art doesn’t merely illustrate the text: it enhances and augments it, providing poignant emotional emphasis at key points of the narrative. Not to mention it also takes full advantage of the inherently visual nature of the colour trope.

And the love story, you want me to tell you about the love story? Well, if I say it’s a happily ever after, I’m not spoiling too much, am I? In short, this is a pretty and poignant piece of romantic fluff, perfect for all occasions calling for some light escapism. (Which is, to be frank, any time of the day.)

Today, let me present you with some high-quality pain wrapped in tender slow-burn fluff.

The author does a sterling job weaving a subtle, unhurried romance that fits neatly into the cracks of the canon text, without ever letting the reader forget that it’s all going to end in tears, no matter what. (Yet you keep wishing it wouldn’t and that makes it hurt SO good.) Extra kudos for fine Tolkienesque prose and excellent use of Middle-earth-flavoured folktales.

This piece does a fine job recounting Kíli’s struggle with an invisible injury, with a credible amount of frustration but without undue melodrama - and with help and hope arriving from a surprising quarter. In a way, it’s a story about learning to look forward to a future that’s different than you expected.

After snoozing on that glimmering pile of gold for 60 years, he starts growing increadibly BORED! So when a troop of dwarves and a hobbit show up at his backdoor, this provides some desperately needed entertainment as well as a way of getting the hell out of that hideous mountain without entirely losing his face.

Warning: drug use/imagery and pure, total crack. I'm not kidding. This is the crackiest thing I've ever written. IDEK, people. I really don't.

So this is a fic-length pipe-weed joke. That’s it, that’s the story.

The reason I keep coming back to this is Smaug’s wonderfully salty (and terminally bored) POV. Also orcs with pickles (I told you this was silly). And more importantly, no dragons were harmed in the making of this ficlet, which is a rare treat in this fandom (and I’m a generally dragon-sympathetic reader).

Summary:

Bilbo is left to tend Thorin as he hovers on the brink of death after the Battle of the Five Armies. Is love enough to save Erebor's king, or is this the last farewell?

"It reminded him of plucking daisy petals to the litany of loves-me, loves-me-not. Yet nothing so simple as love lay on his mind. He barely dared to think it, but his question was not a matter of the heart. It was more basic, more instinctive, and he couldn’t help but feel that with each strand of hair he tended he was divining Thorin’s destiny."

Now, how to review this without giving too much away? It’s tricky, but I’ll do my best.

Perhaps it will suffice to say that the premise is remarkably original, and enchanting in every sense of the word. Or that the rich, evocative prose is a delight to read, and the deliberately unhurried pacing combined with the intimate, atmospheric character of the narrative will keep you spellbound until the very last line.

And that is all I dare to tell you, save that this lovely little tale is best enjoyed with growing anticipation and a bated breath. Mood-uplifting properties solidly demonstrated on a limited sample size of one (1).
