Bilbo Baggins is born with a mark that covers half his arm the day he is born,

More scandalous, is how it is so clearly Dwarven.

First off, this verse is one of the best soulmate AUs I’ve come across, so it’s definitely worth your while to start from the beginning (see that bit where it says ‘Part 3′). But that aside, this story works so very well as a standalone that it’s not a must. (Except that you’re missing out on some Grade A storytelling and worldbuilding, but that’s your loss.)

But this particular story is a wonderful, finely-paced, summery slice-of-life in the Shire, flavoured with just the right amount of longing and mystery. I, for one, will be eagerly awaiting for what comes next, be it in the main storyline or the side-stories.

Summary:

After the song comes on the radio, Ori is determined not to forgive Fíli. But it's not the first song Fíli has written about him, and it likely won't be the last.

Rock Band AU

This one has a song that broke my heart in the very best of ways.

But the real reason I'm reccing this is because I quite simply adore Fíli and Ori being young and stupid and in love ♥

(I never said I was a woman of complicated tastes, did I?)

Summary:

Bilbo has the ring. Thorin has the Arkenstone. Which one of them is worse?

Middle Earth probably doesn’t want to think too hard about that.

Now, let me introduce you to an underappreciated gem that needs more love.

This is the kind of what-if that keeps me reading fanfiction. A well-thought-out, well-researched, well-written tale that moves from the mostly harmless to the truly terrifying with the ease and inevitability of the dawn and the rising tide.

And like the dawn and the tide, the tale too has its share of beauty. There's love in it, so much love. And dark deeds done in the name of most noble intentions. Wonder and horror blended in measure.

If not for anything else, read it for the dark fluff, because the world needs more of it ♥ (And please thank @irrealis for bringing us this story.)

Poe is undercover with the First Order, making good progress on his duties to the Resistance, but one of the privileges that officers in the First Order are expected to take advantage of is that of claiming a Stormtrooper for their bed.

FN-2187 knows he shouldn't have met the officer's eyes. Being chosen by an officer is the easiest way for a Stormtrooper to die.

Beta by my Best Beloved, Turn_of_the_Sonic_Screw.

This is one of my favourite @imaginarygolux stories, or, to be completely honest, the whole series is.

This first part starts off with an intriguing premise, goes on to describe an unlikely (and potentially dangerous) friendship with maybe, just maybe, potential for something else as well. (who am I kidding? exactly no-one, that's who - this is solid good pre-slash.)

Rife with adventurous plot twists and lovely what-ifs, the second part of the series is a treat as well, complete with a wonderful slow barely-there romance plot, just the way I like it.

Please do check this out and enjoy!

Fear and Family (Or, the One Where Kíli Is the Sensible One) (43765 words) by Lumelle

Additional Tags: Mpreg, Baby Dwarves, Overprotective Dwarves, Dwarven Politics, Stubborn Dwarves, BAMF Kíli, Making Up, Dwarf Courting, Pining, Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies

Summary:

After the Battle of Five Armies, Bilbo isn't sure of his welcome in the mountain, and thus returns to the Shire as soon as he can. Somewhat to his surprise, Ori goes with him -- but it turns out Ori has his own reasons for leaving Erebor behind. Well, Bilbo's quite used to being the talk of the Shire.

The line of Durin might suffer of thick skulls, but fortunately Kíli is less stubborn than his uncle and brother, and decides to fix things, even if that means taking his newlywed wife for a ride all the way to the Shire and beyond. Of course, he doesn't yet know what he'll see there -- but he does know how to fix things. Even if it means giving up his claim to the throne.

(Let's not kid ourselves -- that's his favourite part.)

May I present: one of my go-to feel-good reads. Mpreg with a nice side order of misunderstandings, angst, pining and politics leading up to the eventual fluff.

(And that preference probably tells you a little bit too much about me... oh well *shrug*)

I should also mention that this story probably has the best formal solemn declarations of any sort of intent that I've ever read in a fic. I'm damn WEAK for that sort of thing. And I love how Kíli is characterized in this - smart, observant, and having the time of his life, because for once, it's the rest of his family who have managed to make a fine mess out of everything.

Enjoy!

(But please do mind the author's notes - I did say angst, and that comes with some baggage.)

Summary:

Following the War of the Ring, Gimli has questions.

This is a fill for one of my prompts in The Two Thousand Fics on AO3 Gigolas Challenge, more precisely a request for very specific kind of angst with a side-order of love unconfessed. I dared my fellow writers to make me cry.

So, that warning out of the way, @raisingcain-onceagain's story does all that I could have wished for when I entered the prompt, and then some. It’s touching, delightful and surprising at turns -- and yes, it will make you cry, but you’ll be grateful for it (that is, if you’re an inveterate angst muffin like myself).

Fandom: The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien

Summary:

What might Sauron have told the Easterlings and others to secure there assistance? What does a warrior do after her battle is lost? Reference is made to Legolas/Gimli slash, but nothing explicit or pivotal to the story.

Recommended for a well-executed, thought-provoking outsider POV and excellent use of an OC. (And also for really nice background Gimli/Legolas, but that's not really the point here.)

Characters: Bilbo Baggins, Kíli, Fíli, Thorin Oakenshield, Thorin's Companions, Various Hobbits
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Friendship, Family, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Fluff and Angst, violence to canonical timelines

Summary:

Bilbo Baggins, the newly appointed Master of Bag End, has just reached his majority. He lives alone in his fine house, managing his estate, and ignoring the people of Hobbiton as much as they avoid him. When a storm lands him with an unexpected (and unwelcome) little visitor, all Bilbo wants to do is find the baby Dwarf's missing family so he can get back to his own life.

That's not what happens.

This is one of my favourite AUs ever, period.

A powerful, moving story about loneliness, chance and families of choice. (With canon timelines gleefully violated, only the result is brilliant ♥) It might break your heart a little (a lot), but it will patch it right back up again, I promise!

Summary:

Death puts an end to many things. Fili can no longer look forward to becoming king, getting married, having children, or proving himself worthy of his line—but he can still fall in love.

NB: the following can constitute either a warning or a recommendation: I basically wept my way through this one.

Because while there's an engaging romance plot (and pining, so much pining), wonderful OCs and an well-construed world, this is also a canon-compliant and heavily Sansûkh-influenced story, which makes it HURT, but hurt so damn good.

But if you're like me and sometimes like angst for breakfast (because there's only so much fluff a person can stomach at times), then this might be a story for you.

Relationships: Sirius Black/Remus Lupin
Characters: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin

Summary:

Christmas, 1994. Two men, a cave, a hippogriff, some blankets, a hot meal, a blizzard, a bottle of vino rosso, and a conversation.

Another old story that was new to me.

In short: this is a gem. A small, winter-bright, bittersweet gem. The prose is beautifully evocative, the pace unhurried and measured, and flows just so. The character voices are pitch perfect, and it hurts, but in the best of ways, and there's comfort enough to counter the hurt.

If you ever shipped wolfstar, do yourself a favour and read this. You won't be disappointed.

Summary:

An anonymous benefactor makes a generous donation to Harry Potter's School for Squibs in exchange for a weekly letter from the Boy Who Lived.

What begins as a chore soon becomes the only outlet Harry has to talk about the war, love, life, hope, redemption, his renewed obsession with a certain blonde nemesis and how he really, honestly, believes that this will be the year Puddlemere United reclaim the Quidditch League Cup.

Well, first of all, I love reading epistolaries, full stop. And this is a brilliantly executed one: a slow burn "strangers" to friends to lovers story set against a very nice backdrop of wizarding politics... what more could I ask?

This is one of those fics that makes you laugh too loud, grip onto the edge of your seat in the face of impending disaster, throw your hands up in frustration, grin with glee when things work out and finally sigh in contentment at having finished a well-crafted, entertaining and thoughtful tale.

Highly recommended to all my fellow drarry shippers, and a huge thanks to @gingertodgers for writing and sharing this ♥

Summary:

Legolas can fight if provoked, negotiate if absolutely necessary, and open up to close friends. But ask him to interact on a friendly but distant level, and he turns into a nervous wreck. When Elrond asks him to join the Fellowship of the Ring, he is far less anxious about the enemies they will have to face than about the eight companions with whom he will be traveling.

Gimli is fully ready to reach out a hand in friendship to the elf in their group – until he perceives that Legolas is not ready to return the favor. He spends the early days of their Quest seething with resentment.

Their stay in Lothlorien opens the door to new understanding between them, leading to a friendship – or more – that will be sung of for ages.

Dear friends and fellow gigolas shippers: this is the loveliest new story I've read for this pairing in a good while.

It has (eventual) emotional hurt/comfort, excellent characterizations, and a refreshing take on Legolas that's different that anything I've come across before, yet entirely believeable in the book!verse. And fluff. So much besotted fluff you would not believe. Eventually. It takes them a while to get there. But you know slow burn with eventual fluff is my jam, right? Also shameless Gimli worship. Can't go wrong with that.

Also, the last chapter just came in, so why aren't you all reading it already?
