From one of my favourite authors, a beautifully told, emotionally compelling love story set against the rise and fall of Sauron on Middle-earth.
The formation of the Last Alliance, coupled with a wonderfully lush description of both Mithlond and Annúminas, serve as a backdrop to a romance that should feel doomed, but instead, the whole unexpected, onrushing, breath-taking affair takes that feeling of borrowed time and owns it, which gives it a wonderful poignancy.
The inevitable tragedy, when it strikes, is as honestly brutal as the grief that comes after it. Yet this is also a tale of perseverance -- of finding new beginnings amidst a numbing, heart-stopping despair, and from them the will to carry on. And how hope, or life, is never just one person; it's family, it's friends, it's loyalty.
(Not going to lie, though: having some hope, but little certainty, can also be a terrible thing.)
Finally, without spoiling too much I believe I can say that the destination is well worth the journey, and tenacity is rewarded at the end.
